IKEA Hyltarp Sofa Review
Have a few minutes this morning so I thought I’d answer the question I’ve been asked about most these last few months!
Where did you get your living room sofas?!
Leading up to the birth of my third daughter, Margaret I started to realize I needed to cut some things off of my to-do list. One of those things was the monthly washing of my white sofa slipcover. Big fan of white slipcovers with two kids. Once I was outnumbered I realized if there were any household responsibilities that *could* go… then they should go. I sold our nice sofa and traded it in for two ikea sofas! This solved a living room layout issue and now I could care less if someone gets marker on the sofa!
There’s surely still just as much “dirt” on the new sofa but I can’t tell because it’s blue! Still slipcovered which means I can throw in the wash but I’m not having to do it as often! It’s a win.
The most common questions are about the color and the comfort! So let’s dive into that!
In terms of comfort, I prefer firm and I’m happy with these! Would I recommend you go to a store and sit on one yourself before you take my word for it? Yes! You may prefer something completely different! Would I sleep on the sofa? No. Is it comfortable enough for snuggles with the babies and watching tv? Yes. When we have friends over we often end up in the living room and everyone seems to gravitate toward the sofas over the armchairs! We owned the pottery barn dupe ikea sofas in our first home and I couldn’t wait to get rid of them. I found them so uncomfortable! This new style seems to be quite the upgrade!
In terms of color, I’m so pleased. I bought these blind in a moment where pre-baby nesting instincts were taking over and had no clue what they would look like. Unlike traditional furniture shopping, IKEA does not offer a sampling program. So it was either drive three hours to take a glance or place my order. The color is exactly what I wanted. More of a cornflower blue than a gray. No denim undertones to remind me of the sofas we had growing up (they served us well but we’ve all moved past the denim furniture era, right?) and although the fabric is “cheap” in terms of upholstery fabric… it doesn’t appear to be poor quality. Looks more expensive than it is which is always a win! The exact color is called Kilanda Pale Blue.
My very honest opinion is that these sofas are perfect for a young family that isn’t planning on keeping them forever. They do the job and the sleek lines make them appear much nicer than they really are. While they might be the prettiest IKEA sofas I’ve seen, they’re still ikea sofas.
Would I go back and buy them again? Absolutely!
My only beef with the sofa is that the slipcover isn’t a perfect fit. It feels a little loose in a couple of areas and a little tight in others. I don’t think anyone other than me would notice a detail like this but imperfections of this sort tend to drive me insane. Personal flaw and I’m working on it. There’s also not a reverse on the bench cushion underside so if you needed to flip the cushion due to a stain or sticky situation, you’re out of luck!
We opted for two loveseats instead of two sofas! Obviously scale is more important than comfort to me. Another personal flaw perhaps. They were about $899 each before tax. There’s also a longer sofa version AND a sectional available. The sectional would be absolute perfection in a kids playroom or hangout area!
I hope this info is helpful! I wasn’t able to find a ton of info or photos of the sofa during my research so I wanted to make sure I circled back to sharing our thoughts!
